Eating Well for People with Learning Disabilities

Join us for our online lecture celebrating the launch of our new Eating Well guide, which focuses on the nutritional needs of people with learning disabilities.

Eighteen years ago, The Caroline Walker Trust released nutritional and practical guidelines explicitly aimed at supporting people with a learning disability. Alongside the launch of the revised guidelines this autumn, this webinar aims to explore why this resource remains so relevant. Our speakers will discuss the latest evidence, practical application and real-world experience of ensuring the nutritional needs of a group, who often present with complex challenges, are met

Why this event?

The life expectancy for someone with a learning disability is 20 years shorter than that of the general population.  Avoidable deaths, including heart disease and cancers of the digestive tract, are nearly double the rate of the general population.  Better diets could make a real difference to these statistics.

Our revised Eating Well guidance is designed to be at the forefront of the action to improve the nutritional health of people with learning disabilities.  The guidance is essential for those working with or for people with learning disabilities, including health and social care professionals, family, friends, carers, supporters, service leads and commissioners.

Who will speak?

Karen Coulman PhD RD, an Associate Professor in Obesity Research and Practice at the University of Bristol. She’ll talk about her latest research into the role of carers in supporting healthy weight for adults with a learning disability.

Nicola Swaffield, a parent carer, will discuss her experience supporting her son’s healthy eating after he moved to a supported living setting.

Carly Atkinson, MSc RD, is a Specialist Learning Disabilities Dietitian. She’ll be discussing the key points from the CWT Eating Well Guide for People with Learning Disabilities, including what to expect and the barriers they face in improving their food intake and diet.
